Principal Leadership Institute (PLI) Community Mapping Presentations

Monday, March 31st, 6:00 PM

Tolman Hall, UC-Berkeley (just a short walk from the downtown Berkeley BART station!)

The Principal Leadership Institute (PLI) was established at UC Berkeley's Graduate School of Education in 2000 to prepare leaders for San Francisco Bay Area urban schools. Students completing the program receive an M.A. in Education and a recommendation toward a credential, which authorizes service as school administrator (e.g. superintendent, principal, assistant principal, etc.).

CC&S works with the PLI to enable these principals-in-training to learn about their neighborhoods by conducting community mapping exercises. PLI students have been developing inquiry questions and using custom-developed community mapping tools to explore topic areas that contribute to creating a healthy environment for learning. Each student focused on a specific geographic area (usually their school neighborhood) and chose from one of the following topic areas:

·        Transportation (e.g., how students get to and from school. The distance students travel to school and the communities they travel through).

·        Housing/ Residential Spaces and Student Environment (e.g. where and how students live)

·        Community-Based Organizations and Social Service Resources (e.g., the contributions of social service agencies and community-based organizations to the neighborhood).

At this event, more than 35 PLI students will present their community mapping projects. These future educational leaders’ presentations will offer a unique insight into teachers’ and administrators’ understanding and questions about the places and communities in which they work. PLI students come from across the Bay Area (e.g. San Leandro, Martinez, Oakland, San Francisco, Marin County, etc.).  After each presentation, there will be time for discussion, and we are excited about the opportunity to have GCC site coordinators and this community of educators engage with each other.

Please RSVP to Deborah McKoy at debmckoy@berkeley.edu by Wednesday March 26th, so we know how many of you to expect.
